What are the English levels on Promova?

Promova levels map to CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). It’s a series of steps that start from when you’re a beginner until you achieve native-like fluency. As you go from level to level, your command of English improves until you can freely express yourself in all sorts of situations.

Here are the levels you will find in our English language test:

A0 (Beginner)

You’re learning the most basic grammar and simple words. You need help with vocabulary and can only navigate very familiar topics.

A1 (Elementary)

You know simple tenses and can talk about familiar topics. You can understand slow, articulated speech and short factual texts.

A2 (Pre-Intermediate)

You have the foundations and are comfortable in daily situations. You can participate in short conversations and communicate with some help.

C1 (Advanced)

C2 (Proficient)

You’re at native-like fluency and can do anything that people who grew up speaking English can. You can handle high-level tasks such as writing a book or dissertation.

How does our online English language test work?

The Promova online English test helps you assess your current English skills. It’s not an exam, and there is no good or bad outcome. Any result will help you understand your proficiency and set you up for success if you decide to take any official certification later.

Here is how it works:

— 01

You get a series of multiple-choice questions that take up to a minute to answer. These questions will check different aspects of the language, such as vocabulary, grammar, etc.

— 02

During the test, we recommend that you don’t use any tools and don’t try to look up any of the answers. The accuracy of your test will help develop a plan that actually helps you.

— 03

Your result will come back with a number of correct answers and a chance to see your mistakes. It will focus heavily on areas where you can improve your knowledge and suggest what you need to work on.

— 04

In the end, you get a practical path to fluency. It’s up to you whether you decide to take a Promova training program, practice with a tutor, or study independently.

If you decide to take any of our programs, we will help you create a personal learning plan based on your language goals and interests.

People often ask

How can I check my English level?

If you want to test English language proficiency, all you need to do is scroll up and hit that big button. In the end, you’ll get an estimate of your current level that’s 70-80% accurate. Remember that you can never get a 100% accurate free online English assessment because comprehensive tests have to be performed and confirmed by professionals.

If you’re looking for more formal confirmation of your level, we recommend looking at exams such as IELTS, TOEFL, and others. However, these all require time and resources, and you’re better off doing a lot of studying to prepare yourself first.

Use Promova to get as close as possible to an accurate assessment of your English skills. After that, you can work to improve your proficiency for any personal or professional goals.

Is C1 level English good?

At the C1 level, you intuitively understand English and can handle pretty much any task without much effort. For example, you can watch media in English, understand speech about all sorts of subjects in or outside your area of interest, and confidently express yourself in conversation.

The transition from levels B to C, according to CEFR, means moving from independent to proficient language use. In other words, you can start combining complex ideas and add nuance to your speech and expression.

There’s little you can’t do with the language at this stage. While you might need to look up specific terms or ask for clarification if someone speaks in an unfamiliar accent, your overall command of English is in the top 20% of learners. However, you may still benefit from working with a tutor to add richness to your speech and tackle specialized topics and complex grammar structures.

What level of English do I need for university?

You’ll need to take a formal English level exam if you plan to study or work abroad. There are more than 50 different exams, but a handful are popular and accepted almost universally. These are:

  • Cambridge Assessment English Exams: B2 First(FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE), and C2 Proficiency (CPE).
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS). This standardized test is accepted by most institutions and businesses in the English-speaking world. Make sure you check whether you need the General or the Academic version of the IELTS exam.
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Meant specifically for non-native speakers, its results are accepted worldwide in almost every organization.

International exams can be general, academic, and professional. Remember that different countries, organizations, and universities may expect you to take their exams. For example, immigration language exams are often separate, and many include historical information you need to learn in addition to language skills.

On average, 5.5—6.5 IELTS is the minimum score for most students and general work visas. In addition, 78-82 TOEFL is the average score for admission to a US university, not from the top hundred list.

In general, you want to be at confirmed B2 (Upper-intermediate) or higher to be considered for programs that include studying abroad.

How can I improve my English test score?

There are different answers to this question, all of which depend on your current level and how you learn. For example, some learners do very well in small groups and quickly become fluent during conversations and active listening. Others love reading and writing, picking up rules from books seemingly on instinct.

Take a free test on Promova and find out how you can improve. Play to your strengths and study topics you’re interested in. In addition, you can improve your all-round skills by studying parts of the language that you’re not as familiar with.

Above all, remember - if you’re a lifelong learner, improvement will come naturally as part of your self-improvement journey.

How long does going up a level take?

As a rule, going from one proficiency level to the next one takes 100-140 hours of guided practice. The exact time depends on your motivation, dedication, and effort. Learners who study with a tutor can get there faster because they get a lot of direct feedback and exposure to a native-like speaker.

If you can immerse yourself in an English environment, you’ll succeed much faster than if you have to translate words from your native language. This is why we recommend watching movies or TV shows, reading books, and listening to music in English. Exposure will help you pick up speech intuitively over time.

Don’t forget to take advantage of our help on this journey. Promova is your multitool for learning languages; use it to get a boost!
