How can I check my English level?
If you want to test English language proficiency, all you need to do is scroll up and hit that big button. In the end, you’ll get an estimate of your current level that’s 70-80% accurate. Remember that you can never get a 100% accurate free online English assessment because comprehensive tests have to be performed and confirmed by professionals.
If you’re looking for more formal confirmation of your level, we recommend looking at exams such as IELTS, TOEFL, and others. However, these all require time and resources, and you’re better off doing a lot of studying to prepare yourself first.

Is C1 level English good?
At the C1 level, you intuitively understand English and can handle pretty much any task without much effort. For example, you can watch media in English, understand speech about all sorts of subjects in or outside your area of interest, and confidently express yourself in conversation.
The transition from levels B to C, according to CEFR, means moving from independent to proficient language use. In other words, you can start combining complex ideas and add nuance to your speech and expression.
There’s little you can’t do with the language at this stage. While you might need to look up specific terms or ask for clarification if someone speaks in an unfamiliar accent, your overall command of English is in the top 20% of learners. However, you may still benefit from working with a tutor to add richness to your speech and tackle specialized topics and complex grammar structures.
What level of English do I need for university?
You’ll need to take a formal English level exam if you plan to study or work abroad. There are more than 50 different exams, but a handful are popular and accepted almost universally. These are:
- Cambridge Assessment English Exams: B2 First(FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE), and C2 Proficiency (CPE).
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS). This standardized test is accepted by most institutions and businesses in the English-speaking world. Make sure you check whether you need the General or the Academic version of the IELTS exam.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Meant specifically for non-native speakers, its results are accepted worldwide in almost every organization.
International exams can be general, academic, and professional. Remember that different countries, organizations, and universities may expect you to take their exams. For example, immigration language exams are often separate, and many include historical information you need to learn in addition to language skills.
On average, 5.5—6.5 IELTS is the minimum score for most students and general work visas. In addition, 78-82 TOEFL is the average score for admission to a US university, not from the top hundred list.
In general, you want to be at confirmed B2 (Upper-intermediate) or higher to be considered for programs that include studying abroad.
How can I improve my English test score?

If you can immerse yourself in an English environment, you’ll succeed much faster than if you have to translate words from your native language.
