B1 Lessons - Intermediate English Course

Intermediate English opens new doors for your career and education. At this level, you can reliably understand native speakers and handle most common situations abroad.

However, many learners give up on the road from A2 to B1. It seems like a daunting task - grammar gets increasingly complex, and it's hard to tell where to start. Worse yet, textbooks are far too generic, and many are already outdated the second they come out.
That's why we help you learn with practical tasks tailored to your personal goals and interests. Taking English Intermediate courses relevant to your needs with a certified tutor will help grow your confidence and set you up for success.

Know Your Goals

Your B1 course will start by identifying why you need English and how you apply it in your personal and professional life. Every learner is unique, and you may not even know how to articulate your goals yet - that's okay! Your tutor will ask a series of questions to help you find motivation for your lessons.

After that, you'll work out an individual plan tailored to your skills and interests. For example, suppose you're studying to immigrate to Australia. In that case, your plan will include many Australian English materials and local movies. Alternatively, if you want to work at an international company, your B1 lessons will focus on business English practice.

To summarize, your tutor will act as a guide to help you articulate your learning goals and put them into practice during lessons.

Be The Expert

If you're taking B1 classes, you probably already know quite a few things. Whether a professional in your field or a university student, you know a lot about specific subjects. Becoming an intermediate in English will start by conquering your domain of experience.

In other words, your tutor will help you get comfortable with factual topics in your work and personal life. From there, you can use this competence to hold presentations and talk to friends and colleagues about things you already know and love.

This approach will ensure you’re not only interested during lessons but also develop a better understanding of your own field while studying it in English.

Think In Ideas

One of the hardest things for new learners is moving from concrete facts to abstract ideas. The move from A2 to B1 also means becoming an independent speaker. In other words, being able to express thoughts and opinions without help or having to look things up.

To help you start thinking in ideas, your tutor will gradually introduce you to expressing things such as cause and effect in English. You’ll also learn about desires and probabilities to help add nuance and depth to your speaking and writing.

Over time, thinking in ideas will become automatic, and you will be ready to hold fluent conversations without any effort.

Before I came to these courses, I tried to study at other schools. My patience was enough for 2-3 months, after which I gave up trying to learn the language. At the same time, I was accompanied by a state of my own dissatisfaction. Most of all, I liked on Promova that about 80% of the lesson is built in the form of communication with the teacher and classmates, and the grammatical material is presented unobtrusively.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this course for?

This course is for learners who feel stuck on their path from basic rules to the command of the language. You can become intermediate in English once you are ready to take on more complex grammar and structures. Hence, students need to have a foundation first.

We also aim to help you develop balanced skills. Everyone has strong and weak points in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Your tutor will find out what you're best at and help you develop all four skills. This way, if you take an IELTS or TOEFL test in the future, you can understand all components of English with confidence.

What is the intermediate English level?

You move from basic knowledge to independent language use at this level. If you're at B1 level English, you can do your own research and discuss everyday and professional topics with relative freedom. You should also understand standard English speech at a regular cadence, provided it's within your area of interest.

When you have mastered English at the intermediate level, you can talk to natives with relative comfort. You also unlock opportunities at international organizations and companies.

Is English B1 level good?

Once you reach Intermediate English, you can handle everyday situations such as travel, job-related activities, and professional studies. It's a good level of English to communicate with friends and colleagues from different backgrounds. However, B1 learners still struggle with complex topics, unfamiliar accents, and colloquialisms. It takes effort and dedicated study to reach true fluency.

How can I improve my English intermediate Level?

You must immerse yourself in an English-speaking environment to grow past the B1 level. This means watching different media in English, reading books, and speaking to friends and colleagues. In addition, you must develop an intuitive understanding of grammar and comfortably use it in day-to-day communication.

Many students struggle with practice, and doing it alone takes a lot of dedicated effort. That's why Promova offers group lessons with fellow intermediate learners and individual lessons with a certified tutor. Over time, you can practice understanding different accents by ear and improve your speaking confidence.

What should I read in English for intermediate?

To improve your English, you must read as much as possible and improve your vocabulary.

First, find materials you actually enjoy. Are you into sci-fi, short stories, comic books, or nonfiction? Maybe you like magazine articles or professional journals - the choice depends on what you find helpful and fun.

Here are some great book recommendations in English for the Intermediate (B1) level:

  • “Charlotte's Web” - E.B. White
  • “James and the Giant Peach” - Roald Dahl
  • “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” - Arthur Conan Doyle
  • “The Black Cat” - Edgar Allan Poe
  • “Breakfast at Tiffany's” - Truman Capote

This list is by no means mandatory. You can ask friends and your tutor for other suggestions - any focused reading practice will help you improve.
